The Land of Sad Songs
Ruth Vilmi (engelskalärare i Tekniska Högskolan) har skrivit en fin sida om finsk melankolisk musik. Idén har varit att "expose the images of Finnish men and women given by lyrics of domestic music, both in mental and physical meaning". Hon har översatt Eppu Normaalis "Tuhansien murheellisten laulujen maa" (The land of the sad songs) till engelska så att utlänningar ska få höra vad vår musik handlar om. Låten i fråga är dock ironisk och karikerad och ger inte en helt realistisk bild av den finska mentaliteten, men det är roligt att läsa översättningen:
"Innocently happened
he to be born in this land
semiarctic, dark and very cold
where already the ancestors
intoxicated, naturally
beat up their wives and sons
only if they could
..."
